Sharing the load to cut costs

Article Abstract:

It has become common in the US for multinational companies to unite their various back office functions, locating them in areas with low labour costs and operating shared service centres as support businesses. This approach is now being adopted in the UK and Europe. The development of shared service centres for European divisions of US companies has brought considerable benefits to the UK, with only Ireland and the Netherlands having being more successful. The companies that have received most publicity in creating shared service centres have generally been those that have set up accounting centres in low-cost labour areas, especially the Caribbean and India.

Better off down the road

Article Abstract:

The Training and Enterprise Council in Grimsby, England, and the European Commission's European Regional Development Fund have since 1992 been supporting a 'buy local' campaign in the area, where male unemployment is more than 12%. The campaign, instigated by North East Lincolnshire Council, encourages large businesses in the area to purchase from local small companies. The large companies have found that they have obtained better service from purchasing from local firms.
