The wrong road to a squeegee-free city

Article Abstract:

Shadow home secretary Jack Straw has spoken recently of the need to 'clean up' street life in the UK. He called on the police to take tougher action against graffiti artists, beggars, alcoholics and other people who have become a feature of urban life today, thus making life quieter and safer for ordinary law-abiding people. A better approach would be to greatly improve the appearance of and services in cities and large towns, thus making it much less necessary for people to live on the streets and make their living there.

Tap into the future

Article Abstract:

Music group Spinal Tap, made up of Nigel Tufnel, Derek Smalls and David St Hubbins, has recently re-formed for the third time. They are now linking with IBM in a television advertisement which will be shown across the world and will highlight IBM's involvement with the Olympic Games in Atlanta in summer 1996. They do not believe that this new approach is in any way going against the basic beliefs of rock and roll, and point out that they gained artistic stimulation from joining with the world of commerce.

They've got the Chancellor fuming

Article Abstract:

Her Majesty's Customs and Excise and Imperial Tobacco are currently bringing action in the High Court against Sten Bertelsen and B.J. Cunningham, who are trading in cigarettes purchased at lower duty rates in Luxembourg. If Bertelsen and Cunningham win their case, the government will lose several billion pounds in tax, and the UK tobacco industry will be thrown into crisis. They believe that they will be able to exploit legal loopholes for several years to come.
