The wonderful world of Shrigley

Article Abstract:

Moral conundrums are very attractive, according to David Shrigley, who has become well known in the Kelvingrove area of Glasgow, Scotland, for the strange notices he puts on display in the streets of the area. He believes that his drawings are aimed at people who like to laugh at moral crises. He likes to make fun of things that could be depressing, and feels that laughter is important. He is attracted to existential things, and believes that artists need to spend a lot of time dreaming.

It has launched with a collection of six new commissions in editions of between 20 and 200 from artists including Keith Coventry and Cornelia Parker. The unit aims to allow artists to investigate ideas in materials with which they may not be familiar and to bring their work to a wider audience.
