Montserrat tells a story of failure, incompetence and callousness

Article Abstract:

The Montserrat chief minister, David Brandt, argues that the United Kingdom would rather this dependent territory ceased to exist. He criticises the UK for bureaucratic obstacles in providing aid following the eruption of a volcano on the island in June 1997. There is a need for investment in roads, housing, schools and sewage treatment due to the damage caused by the volcano. Aid has come from other Caribbean nations, but there is a need for investment in infrastructure on the island.

Profiting from the dividends of peace

Article Abstract:

Hazelwood Integrated College in North Belfast hopes that the peace process currently underway in Northern Ireland will allow it to receive a 'peace dividend' of 9.9 million pounds sterling in the next financial year. This will ensure that it can build a new three-storey building to replace ageing mobile classrooms and concrete blocks. This is part of a planned 63 million pounds sterling building scheme covering 27 schools in Northern Ireland.

Oddball marriage trying to put kids first

Article Abstract:

The Funding Agency for Schools (FAS), which was set up in 1994 to fund grant-maintained schools and to play a role in planning school places, has received mixed reactions. Even within local government, views are divided, with some criticising it for eroding local government's powers and others welcoming its role in finding extra school places. Generally, relations with local authorities have been better than expected.
