A crash course in

Article Abstract:

UK Foreign Secretary Robin Cook states that trade links are the main reason for his trip to four countries in South-east Asia. However, it is clear that human rights are also a key consideration. This is particularly the case in Indonesia, where Cook's proclaimed new ethical foreign policy will come under great pressure. He has emphasized his commitment to strengthening commercial links between the UK and Indonesia, but also met a group of human rights activists during his short stay in Indonesia. He must now show a firm stance on human rights if he is to maintain his credibility.

Algeria rejects UN help as stunned survivors tell of massacre horror

Article Abstract:

Participants in a one-day European Union ministerial mission to Algeria have reported that significant progress was made in discussions with government ministers, representatives of the official opposition and newspaper editors. However, there still seems to be little prospect of bringing the extreme violence in Algeria to an end. The Algerian government seems unwilling to accept the type of assistance being offered by the European Union, and the European Union is reluctant to take a tougher line.

He's clever, but has the man in the Foreign Office got a heart?

Article Abstract:

UK Foreign Secretary Robin Cook showed a mixed performance diplomatically in 1997. He seems to react very negatively to only mild criticism, and is particularly hostile towards journalists. This has been seen particularly in relation to his private life. He is widely acknowledged to be a clever politician, but is also seen as somewhat heartless. It remains to be seen whether he will make a success of the UK's presidency of the European Union.
