Advisers may be very good but sometimes it makes sense to go for broker

Article Abstract:

There are a number of key factors to take into account when deciding to use the services of an independent financial adviser (IFA) or a stockbroker when making a large investment. Attention should be given to the regulatory frameworks within which IFAs and stockbrokers operate, for example, and to the way in which they receive payment. The most significant issue is likely to be how well the IFA or stockbroker researches the investments recommended, as most of the products available to private investors are likely to be very similar.

No future for dealers

Article Abstract:

The position of stockbroking dealers in the UK has been gradually eroded since the 1960s. This trend is set to be accelerated with the implementation of the Stock Exchange Electronic Trading Service on Oct 20, 1997. This will allow buyers and sellers to be matched by computer, instead of orders being carried out by a market-maker who makes money from the deal. It will still be necessary to use dealers to carry out difficult or unusual orders, but their numbers are set to decline dramatically.

Shares without the stuffiness

Article Abstract:

The range of stockbroking services available in the UK is expanding as more people become interested in owning shares. It is now possible to use an execution-only service to buy and sell shares, for example, and there are also some specialist companies which can undertake a one-off transaction at a low cost. Postal and telephone share-dealing services are now offered by many large banks and building societies, and even smaller building societies have share dealing operations.
