A dreadful performance

Article Abstract:

The UK Arts Council seems to be actively encouraging the closure of small theatres, thus allowing resources to be focused on a small number of large, high profile theatres. Most children now have very limited access to drama, and this means that interest in drama will diminish rapidly over the next 20 years. The government has taken a misguided approach to the theatre, scaling down educational programmes in the arts and failing to provide small theatres with adequate funding. There seems to be a large gap between the government's stated commitment to the arts and the reality of what is actually happening in theatres.

Sorry, Sir Peter, but things are getting better for theatre

Article Abstract:

Theatre director Peter Hall was misguided in claiming that the Arts Council seems to be seeking to bring about the closure of many of the UK's small theatres in order to focus resources on the larger theatres. In fact, many small theatres have received increased funding. It is important to acknowledge that government policy towards the arts is becoming more positive, but also to accept that change will inevitably take some time to have a real impact.
