A happy ending to the tadpole's tail

Article Abstract:

Jerome Gross discovered a collagen-chopping enzyme in tadpoles' tails in 1962, which could be used to produce drugs for cancer, arthritis and eye diseases. There are three sorts of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs:) collagenases, stromelysins and gelatinases, which destroy connective tissues. The tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (Timp) controls MMPs by binding to them. MMPs can release tumour cells so secondary tumours could be prevented. MMP inhibitors could prevent destruction of the cornea in eye diseases.

The knife over Bosnia

Article Abstract:

Franjo Tudjman, President of Croatia, seems likely to be re-elected although he is not democratic and his policy is the division of Bosnia. The Croatian government does not wish Serbs in Croatia to demonstrate their nationalism. All criticism is denounced and journalists are prosecuted. Tudjman seems to think that mass resettlement and territorial expansion with new borders will bring a solution to the war.
