A haven of tolerance on the Golden Horn

Article Abstract:

There has been a Jewish community in Turkey for more than 500 years. It has managed to survive through many difficult times, but has never been the subject of organised anti-Semitism. Indeed, the 25,000 Jews now living in Turkey regard themselves as acting as a key link between Turkey and Israel. Turkey's Jews also hold considerable influence with the US. Jews in Turkey believe that they have generally been treated well compared with Jews in other Muslim countries and in many European Christian countries.

A royal return brings nation back into fold

Article Abstract:

The Queen's visit to South Africa is not significant for the vast majority of South Africans in terms of the country's relationship with the UK, but they welcome it as a sign that South Africa is regaining international recognition. She has received a warm welcome, but has not attracted the great enthusiasm which greeted her on her last visit to South Africa, in 1947. She particularly hopes to establish links with the black community.

Turkey's moral framework crumbles under weight of corruption and deceit

Article Abstract:

Corruption scandals have now become part of everyday life in Turkey. This has spilled over into politics, where the two centre-right coalition partners have been clashing. Most recently, prime minister Tansu Ciller has been accused by prime minister Mesut Yilmaz of embezzling 6,000,000 pounds sterling just before leaving office. In return, she has called on him to resign immediately.
