A fantasist hidden in suburbia

Article Abstract:

Hilary Mantel, who has recently published her seventh novel, has attracted considerable praise from critics. She comes from a very ordinary, suburban background, and did not particularly aim to become a novelist. She has successfully overcome many years of health problems, and having her work rejected by publishers has taught her to be resilient and determined. She is now in the more enjoyable situation of being able to command large sums from publishers.
