When the only way out is a shotgun

Article Abstract:

In 1991 suicide among farmers increased in Shropshire, Devon, Cornwall and mid-Wales where subsidy cuts, high interest rates and isolation bring despair. Brian, a farmer near Welshpool, Shropshire, failed in his suicide attempts. After losing his wife, he worried about the cost of new tanks and drainage pipes required under anti-pollution laws. The National Farmers Union and the local community council are campaigning to advise farmers of help lines and counselling services.

A Macdonald never forgets

Article Abstract:

The Battle of Glencoe is still commemorated annually by the Macdonald clans in a ceremony which now boosts the tourist trade. The 300th anniversary of the slaying of 38 Macdonalds by Campbells of the Earl of Argyll's regiment, was honoured on Feb 13 1992. This fairly small incident has survived in importance because of the myths, legends and literature surrounding it and the site of the monument is always on the itinery of guided tours of the area.
