A man of many parts

Article Abstract:

An opera 'Biko' has been written by Priti Paintal, composer and Richard Fawkes, librettist, 15 years after the death of Steve Biko, the founder of South Africa's Black Consciousness Movement. Many other books, songs and films have been created about him, perhaps because he had such a lot of followers despite being forbidden to write or travel and because he died so young, at 31. In a secular age artists base works around Biko as previous generations would Christ. The opera is sponsored by the Royal Opera House Garden Venture scheme. It is a personal opera about apartheid experienced in Britain, performed at the Birmingham Rep, England, May 1992.

The man who loved the world

Article Abstract:

Toru Takemitsu, Japan's leading modern composer, mixed with some of the most highly respected and influential people in Japanese cultural life. These include novelist Kenzaburo Oe and poet Shuntaro Tanikawa. He was portrayed in the western world as a solemn, ethereal person, but this is not how he is generally seen in Japan. Tanikawa emphasizes that Takemitsu enjoyed jokes and that he was attracted to cheap films and novels. He had a very unsnobbish attitude, and this made him a very successful composer for films.

Looking for financial inspiration

Article Abstract:

The Arts Council Literature Panel withdrew funding from the literary journal Agenda, edited by William Cookson, in 1993. Agenda was founded by 16-year-old William Cookson and the poet Ezra Pound in the 1950s. Agenda has a distinguished history but has not recognised many newer contributors. It sells about 2,000 copies per issue, so other sources of funding may be difficult to find. However, Cookson has raised half the amount needed for one year, including a donation from T. S. Eliot's widow.
