A martyr for democracy

Article Abstract:

The murder of Russian democrat Galina Starovoitova has attracted a very strong reaction from ordinary Russians, very large numbers of whom waited many hours to lay flowers by her coffin. Her murder has united the democratic movement, and she is already being seen as a martyr. However, it is unlikely that there will be popular unrest involving large numbers of people, as many ordinary Russians have become deeply cynical about politics. Indeed, many Russians prefer a government that does nothing to one that tries to rule.

Grozny's fate; Russia's destiny

Article Abstract:

Russian field commanders directing operations in the Chechen city of Grozny have openly defied the country's defence minister and have been launching attacks against civilians. This reflects the split in the Russian armed forces and indicates the extent to which the battle for control over policy in Chechnya has become a key element in the battle for overall political control in Russia. President Boris Yeltsin is anxious to dispel rumours that he is losing control of his administration.

Extremists put democracy to the test

Article Abstract:

Russia's emerging democracy will be severely challenged by continuing problems with corruption, poverty and doubts over the country's international role. The forthcoming elections for a new lower house of parliament must take place with no serious incidents of fraud if Russia is to show that it can truly operate a democratic system. The election results will have a key impact on the pattern of Russian politics in the next six months.
