China warns US off Taiwan test site

Article Abstract:

Taiwan is part of Chinese territory, and the US should therefore not intervene to stop China undertaking military exercises in the Taiwan Strait, according to Chinese foreign minister Qian Qichen. China is soon to begin nine days of naval and aircraft exercises, and is clearly attempting to put pressure on Taiwan in the run-up to presidential elections on Mar 23, 1996. The US has criticised China's actions, and has moved an aircraft carrier into the region.

Peking's foe triumphs in Taiwan poll

Article Abstract:

Taiwanese president Lee Teng-hui, the candidate of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) party, won 54% of the vote in the island's first democratic presidential election. Some observers believe that support for him was boosted by the aggressive attitude towards Taiwan which China adopted in the run-up to the election. The strong sign that the Taiwanese are not prepared to give in to China may force China to reassess its strategy towards Taiwan.
