Satellite's mission to map the Red Planet

Article Abstract:

The American Mars Observer spacecraft is due to be launched on Sep 251992 on an 11-month voyage with seven instruments to map the planet and investigate climate and geology. The mission is the only one remaining of a series, due to rising costs. Robotic landers and rovers have been cancelled. President Bush's 1989 Space Exploration Initiative involving the first human to land on Mars on Jul 20 2019, the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong's walk on the moon, has suffered budget cuts.

Nasa goes in search of love

Article Abstract:

The asteroid known as Eros, which was discovered in 1898, is to be orbited and mapped by a spacecraft to be launched soon by Nasa. The Near-Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (Near) mission is one of the new 'Discovery' series, which have much lower budgets than earlier Nasa missions. Experts believe that asteroids are remnants of the building blocks from which planets were formed 4.6 billion years ago.

New light found in the outer suburbs

Article Abstract:

A new asteroid, 1992 AD, discovered on 9 January 1992 AD inhabits the outer areas of the solar system. It supersedes Chiron as the most distant asteroid known. The tiny red planet measures about 150 km and pursues a strange elliptical path. In 93 years 1992 AD will arrive at its aphelion, 4.85 billion km from the Sun, rivaling Pluto as the outermost planet.
