Postcards from the edge

Article Abstract:

The South Bank's touring exhibition, 'Outer Space', demonstrates the idea thet people no longer appreciate the difference between visual fact and fiction because they watch so much television. Ania Bien, a Polish Jew, installed 18 black and white photographs in a narrow space to resemble doors off a corridor. The photographs seem to be mementoes, fragments of a whole which represent victims of the Holocaust. Susan Trangmar shows a slide-projection work of Bengali schoolchildren in a British school playground. Genevieve Cadieux, Ulrich Gorlich, Jeffrey Shaw and Judith Barry also exhibit.

Scents and sensuality

Article Abstract:

The Robert Mapplethorpe retrospective currently being held at the Hayward Gallery in London, England, clearly shows the photographer's strong interest in sex. Some of the photographs highlight Mapplethorpe's constant search for unusual and extreme sexual experiences. However, others also demonstrate that he was interested in others subjects, including flowers and faces. Overall, his main aim was to escape a mundane, predictable existence.

Great, on the face of it

Article Abstract:

The National Portrait Gallery is currently holding a retrospective exhibition of the work of photographer Richard Avedon. This traces his rather meandering career, leading to some truly remarkable achievements. Many of the photographs are of rich and famous people, and show Avedon as a master of the photographic image.
