Prisoners of romance

Article Abstract:

A history of the Mills & Boon publishing house by Joseph McAleer sheds new light on the impact of this firm's romantic novels on the lives of ordinary women. McAleer provides a great deal of information about the publishers and about Mills & Boon writers, but relatively little attention is given to the reader. However, it is possible to identify trends which seem to indicate that Mills & Boon does not wish its readers to improve their lives, as this would mean their loss as customers. Indeed, it can be argued that Mills & Boon's success has involved exploitation.

Gloating over fallen women

Article Abstract:

There are many examples of women who fail to cope with the pressures of fame. They are subjected to detailed scrutiny as soon as they show any faults, and often end up facing disaster because they cannot understand the complicated processes involved in being a celebrity. In many cases, their place in the public consciousness becomes disconnected from the talents or qualities through which they originally became famous. It seems that women will never be able to survive publicity without some personal damage.
