Escape from Losers' Lane

Article Abstract:

Novelist Frank McCourt welcomes the fact that 'Angela's Ashes,' which recounts his tragic childhood in the slums of Limerick, Ireland, in the late 1930s, has attracted controversy. He has been strongly criticized by people who believe that he should not have given such a graphic account of how life was for ordinary Irish people at that time. There were many dramatic happenings in McCourt's childhood, and he only included a small proportion in his memoir. His book was not intended to be therapeutic, and he is clearly still deeply affected by his past.

Songmaster of the disapora

Article Abstract:

There has traditionally been very little literature dealing with the experiences of black British people, according to novelist Caryl Phillips. This is what prompted him to begin writing his own novels, along with plays and works of non-fiction. He has gradually turned to his Caribbean roots, and has sought to identify links between Africa, the old world of Europe and the new world of the Americas. He has found some answers in American literature, and is now professor of English and Creative Writing at Amherst College, Massachusetts.
