A raw look at our cultural landscape

Article Abstract:

Artist Julian Cooper is willing to submit himself to very difficult conditions as he paints his landscape works. He places great emphasis on the tension between man and the rest of nature, and his paintings show the very fragile nature of Earth. However, he does not regard himself as an environmental campaigner. He has worked hard to distance himself from the stylistic influence of his father and grandfather, and does so partly through excursions into the countryside. He often travels with poet Terry Gifford, who is determined to rid nature poetry of sentimentality.

Tories' fear of 'sleaze' label swells majority

Article Abstract:

Many Conservative MPs voted in favour of the full disclosure of their Commons-related earnings, a key recommendation of the Nolan investigation into standards in public life, as they felt that they could not afford to be under any suspicion about their earnings in the run-up to the next general election. The Labour party has supported disclosure all along, claiming that transparency will rid politics of any corruption in the area of earnings. It points out that there is strong public support for this move.

Salmond vies for Tartan throne

Article Abstract:

A constitutional matter such as Scottish independence should be decided in a referendum, rather than just at a general election, according to Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Alex Salmond. For this reason, a poll on Scottish independence will still take place even if the SNP wins an overall majority at the election for the Edinburgh Parliament in May 1999. He wishes to ensure that the forthcoming SNP annual conference shows that the party is ready to take control of the Scottish Parliament.
