A reel of your own

Article Abstract:

America signed the Berne Convention international copyright agreement, which originated in 1886, on Mar 1 1992. This protects films and books for 75 years whereas previously American films lapsed out of copyright after 28 years and passed into the public domain. If the original is changed in some way it can be copyrighted by a new owner by registering it with the Library of Congress copyright office. A new soundtrack can be provided for silent films, black and white films can be coloured but talkies have to have some original authorship added.

Master of the reel classics

Article Abstract:

Composing a film soundtrack is very similar to journalism, as both processes are mainly fuelled by commercialism and deadlines, according to composer John Williams. His work has gained widespread acclaim, including five Oscars, but he is quick to downplay his cultural significance. He has collaborated extensively with director Steven Spielberg, and feels that Spielberg has the ability to bring out his talents. He believes that music should accompany a film, rather than dominate it.

Honourable men unable to cope with the reel world

Article Abstract:

The Heritage Select Committee's film industry inquiry included some MPs with considerable knowledge of the industry, but its approach was inevitably rather uninformed. It has had to deal with conflicting evidence because of the fragmentary nature of the UK film industry, and debate has at times been confused. However, the outcome of the inquiry is likely to be positive, as it may recommend tax changes which would encourage new initiatives.
