A sick economy shakes out the fake invalids

Article Abstract:

Italy has had severe economic problems for many years, with public debt now representing more than 120% of GDP and investor confidence being at an extremely low level. It is clear that this situation cannot be allowed to continue, and this has prompted moves to reduce the deficit. On a wider scale, many observers are now pointing out that dramatic changes must be made in public life. Waste and corruption have added significantly to the country's economic problems, and there is a growing feeling that this is no longer acceptable.

Facing up to Italy's crisis

Article Abstract:

Italy's political climate remains very unstable, despite the decision to replace Silvio Berlusconi as prime minister with Lamberto Dini. Business leaders have little hope that a change of leader will help to stabilise the economy, and some economists are predicting further problems, with high taxes, little encouragement for small investors and high interest rates. The country's national debt is still more than 120% of gross domestic product, and inflation is starting to rise again.

Fake invalids at heart of Italy's postal scandal

Article Abstract:

The problems with the postal service in Italy have generally been attributed to the fact that it employs 17,000 invalids. People have been prepared to accept poor standards of service because they feel that it is right that invalids be given useful employment. However, it has now been revealed that many are not invalids at all. This is costing the state large sums in fraudulent invalidity benefits, and prevents those who are genuinely disabled from gaining employment.
