Politics in action - the decline of democracy

Article Abstract:

The progressive shift to the right which has been seen in UK politics over recent years is having a negative impact on democracy. Political parties are targeting increasingly narrow sections of the population, and this is serving to reduce voters' choices. Difficult policy issues are deliberately avoided, and elections are fought only on a very narrow range of issues. Some observers believe that this problem will only be overcome if a different voting system is introduced.

Now for the year when the lull breaks

Article Abstract:

There were few really positive political developments in the UK in 1995. The Labour party has been waiting to become the party of government, so has been focusing on establishing links with industry and the media and devising policies. The Conservative party has been waiting for indications of an economic recovery which will revive its popularity. However, this trend will not continue into 1996, and more positive political developments are likely to take place soon.

The ghost in the Tory machine

Article Abstract:

Margaret Thatcher no longer has any direct presence in political life in the UK, and has taken on a very low public profile, rarely giving interviews. However, John Major's administration has followed hers very closely on key issues. Some useful bureaucratic reforms have been made, but her legacy of political centralism remains very dominant. Her spirit lives on in a negative way, hampering developments rather than encouraging them.
