Politics points to the wrong Budget strategy

Article Abstract:

Measures likely to be contained in the forthcoming Budget will indicate that the UK government assumes that the economic is basically in a reasonably good state and that this will remain the case in the run-up to the next general election. If this does not happen, the Conservative party would be placed in a very difficult position. There are already signs that manufacturing industry could face severe difficulties, and a serious recession may even emerge.

Asian shock may have a sting in its tail

Article Abstract:

There are strong reasons for anticipating that the world economy will see a significant upturn in the period to 2001. However, there is still a possibility that the Asian economic crisis will eventually have a negative impact on the world economy in a delayed and indirect way. It will only be possible to avoid this if policymakers in Europe and Japan take clear steps to boost the rise in domestic demand, while domestic growth in the US is restricted.

Strong signs for UK in European capital boom

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable pessimism in the UK recently about the prospects for economic growth, but this view may actually be too negative. Latest retail sales figures do not indicate the beginnings of a recession, contrasting with international fears about emerging threats to the world economic recovery. European economies may well strengthen in the near future as companies catch up with replacement spending which has been delayed for some time.
