A spelling test for genes

Article Abstract:

Recent research indicates that there are between 240,000 and 1 million very small variations, or single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), in the coding of genes involved in human disease. This finding plays a significant part in discovering how genes render people susceptible to disease. Pharmaceutical manufacturers have now recognized that they must cooperate in finding SNPs, and 10 international pharmaceutical concerns have also agreed to make their information about SNPs public, thus avoiding conflict about the ownership of such information.

Blair wrong on GM crops, says chief government scientist

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom government ministers should not permit genetically modified (GM) crops to be released onto the market before 2003, according to Chief Scientific Adviser Sir Robert May. His comments are in direct conflict with Prime Minister Tony Blair's position on this issue, and will therefore cause considerable embarrassment. A report co-written by May and Chief Medical Officer Sir William Donaldson indicates that GM foods are safe to eat.
