A steep and slippery hill to climb

Article Abstract:

Prime minister John Major achieved a clear victory in the ballot for the leadership of the Conservative party, and is thus likely to avoid any further rebellion by Conservative MPs. The political atmosphere should improve, and politics should start becoming more rational again. Now, John Major must become more assertive, using his power to maximum effect. He must work quickly to consolidate his victory if he is to improve the popularity of the Conservative party with the general public.

The old order is crumbling

Article Abstract:

The resignation of foreign secretary Douglas Hurd is likely to fuel concerns among loyal Conservatives that John Major may have taken too great a risk in precipitating a battle for the leadership of the party. It is clear that the old cabinet is now starting to disintegrate, and some observers believe that John Major is now being reckless in his efforts to remain in power. The Conservative government is likely to find itself in an even weaker position after the leadership contest.

It's low, it's dirty, and it's personal

Article Abstract:

Fierce attacks launched recently by both the Labour and Conservative parties on the other's policies and alleged hypocrisy give an indication that the forthcoming election campaign is likely to be very negative in tone. Both parties have given in to the temptation to make personalised attacks, going against the tradition of mutual restraint. Against this background, politicians would be wrong to complain that voters are becoming cynical.
