Absent Algerians deliver poll victory

Article Abstract:

Very mixed information is emerging from Algeria about the outcome of the recent constitutional referendum. The government claims that there was a very high turnout, but many polling stations appeared to be almost deserted, casting some doubt on official figures. Many Algerians stayed away from polling stations for fear of being caught in a terrorist attack, while others made a point of voting in protest at the violence being perpetrated in many parts of the country by Islamic fundamentalists. Opposition parties claim that the new constitution will return Algeria to being a one-party state.

On patrol with masked gendarmes

Article Abstract:

Masked policemen operate in convoys in Algeria, braving possible assassination attempts and bombings in their search for Islamist killers. They are acutely aware that almost all armed Islamists carry modern Israeli weapons and that they are efficiently trained and organised. They are undoubtedly extremely brave, but it appears that they are fighting a losing battle as government forces lose control of large parts of the country.
