Western tacticians strive to find a path out of the morass

Article Abstract:

The US, France and the UK are now looking at the best ways of bringing together a coherent policy towards Bosnia. They are focusing on military, political and diplomatic approaches, hoping in this way to obtain the release of the hostages, prevent the war escalating and possibly encourage the Bosnian Serbs to agree to a settlement. They seem to have decided to avoid going through the executive bureaucracy of the United Nations, but will retain the Security Council as the custodian of legitimate action.

Few cheers for Rose as he bows out of Bosnia

Article Abstract:

Lieutenant-General Sir Michael Rose attracted criticism from both the Bosnian Muslims and the Bosnian Serbs during his year in Sarajevo as commander of United Nations forces in Bosnia. He seems to have represented the failure of western nations to bring about a settlement of their choosing in former Yugoslavia, and has not lived up to the high hopes which were expressed when he arrived in Bosnia. However, he remains self-confident, and does not accept that his mission has been unsuccessful.

Stakes raised as alliance treads dangerous line

Article Abstract:

The western alliance regards the recent Nato aerial and artillery attacks on Bosnian Serb targets as a vital way of retaining the credibility of Nato's Bosnian policies. Military action of this kind will inevitably have an impact on broader diplomatic and military developments in the region. It is vital that the current peace initiative is allowed to continue, and Nato must not become involved in a large-scale Balkan conflict.
