A tale of two cities - with two very different endings

There seems to be no immediate explanation for the extensive media coverage attracted by the trial in the US of British au pair Louise Woodward, who was accused of the murder of eight-month-old Matthew Eappen. However, this phenomenon can be partly attributed to the people involved. The legal team included Barry Scheck, who was already famous for having represented OJ Simpson, and there were also characters involved in the case with whom ordinary people could identify. A similar case involving a black woman has not received any media attention at all.

Article Abstract:

The trial of British nanny Louise Woodward in the US for the murder of a young child in her care has attracted extensive media attention. She is gradually gaining celebrity status, and her story may even become the subject of a book or a film. Her trial has become a public issue, and large numbers of ordinary people are being placed in a position to make their own decision about whether she is guilty or not. Indeed, her trial may serve as a role model for the televising of court proceedings.
