A tax-and-spend election fight doesn't add up

Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative party was very effective in issuing negative publicity about the Labour party's spending plans in the run-up to the 1986 and 1991 general elections. However, this tactic is not proving so effective now, as the Labour party is clearly emphasising that increases in spending will be met from existing resources. Instead, the Conservative party is accusing Labour of hypocrisy, as it has given no clear details of the savings which have to be made to meet new spending commitments. It seems increasingly clear that two parties actually have very similar policies on tax and spending.

New Labour, new Lord Chancellor

Article Abstract:

Judicial review is an important step, but cannot be undertaken without knowing what is the correct area of operation for judges and what is the correct area of operation for Parliament, according to Lord Alexander Irvine. He is currently one of the most successful barristers in London, England, and is a close adviser to Labour party leader Tony Blair. It is likely that he would become Lord Chancellor if the Labour party wins the forthcoming general election. He firmly believes that barristers should be able to take on any case, regardless of their own views.

The Chancellor in waiting

Article Abstract:

The Bank of England would retain its 'advisory role' under a Labour government, according to shadow chancellor Gordon Brown, reacting to recent rumours that the Bank of England would become independent. However, his long-term plans for the Bank would certainly have a considerable impact on monetary policy. These plans would include the creation of a strong new full-time monetary policy committee within the Bank.
