A time to live, a time to die

Article Abstract:

Composer Iannis Xenakis does not believe that he has ever knowingly imposed external patterns on his music. He is to celebrate his 75th birthday on May 30, 1997, and believes that growing older has influenced his views on many issues. He no longer has any enthusiasm for composing for large ensembles, and does not feel really driven to undertake any particular work. He has composed a short work entitled 'SEA-CHANGE' for the 1997 Proms. This is dedicated to Proms controller Nicholas Kenyon, and is due to be premiered on Jul 23, 1997.

Towards a jazz utopia

Article Abstract:

The song-cycle piece 'Bar Utopia,' which was a 1995 Bath Festival commission, is a vision of the jazz ensemble as a model of the perfect society, according to composer Mike Westbrook. He regards the ban as a model of socialism, with people's individuality being linked together. He believes that this cooperation is what creates the most successful music. He has for many years subscribed to the views of the 'Third Stream,' a term first used in the late 1950s to describe cooperation between jazz and classical music.

Making a little thought go a long, long way

Article Abstract:

The traditional full orchestra should not be seen as the only acceptable form of orchestra, according to minimalist composer Steve Reich. He prefers to work with a large group of specialist musicians, or with groups such as the Ensemble Modern. The voice plays a key role in his work, especially his early pieces, and he has had to use singers with very special abilities. Most recently, he is Radio 3's 'Composer of the Week,' marking his 60th birthday.
