All in the line of duties

Article Abstract:

UK chancellor Kenneth Clarke has for a long time been emphasising that he will not make tax cuts which the government cannot afford, but most people remained unconvinced of this approach until the 1996 Budget. He appears to have been able to convince most Conservative backbenchers that this was the appropriate Budget, even though it may not assist the party in winning the next general election. He was not aiming to gain short-term political advantage over the Labour party, and this may gain him the respect of some voters.

Brown plans a Budget worthy of his hero

Article Abstract:

It is believed that UK Chancellor Gordon Brown has some admiration for the work of David Lloyd George. Brown's forthcoming Budget will play a key role in defining the purpose of the new Labour government, in the same way as his predecessor's 1909 budget defined the purpose of the Asquith government. It will based on the beginnings of welfare reform, as was the 1909 budget. Its main themes will be long-term investment, fairness and long-term stability.

Cautious Clarke gives a penny and holds out a 20p promise

Article Abstract:

The UK government's 1995 Budget introduces a 3.25 billion pounds sterling package of tax cuts which includes a 1p reduction in income tax. Government ministers claim that Budget measures will increase the disposable income of the average family by 450 pounds sterling a year. It is likely that the standard rate of income tax will later come down to 20p, and observers also believe that base interest rates may soon be cut.
