A world order of scandal and graft

Article Abstract:

The scandal surrounding Hiroshi Nakajima, the director-general of the World Health Organisation, is the most recent of many which have damaged the reputation of international agencies. Some obsevers are now expressing fear that international bureaucracy has become out of control. It appears that international agencies are particularly vulnerable to corruption, inefficiency and to falling victim to personal ambitions. This is partly because their leaders are selected through an inefficient and complicated process.

Europe must look south, not east

Article Abstract:

The southern European members of the European Union are increasingly calling for more attention to be given to the potential dangers represented by developments in the Muslim countries of North Africa. They believe that there should be a move away from the extensive political and financial commitment which has been made to eastern Europe over recent years, and are putting pressure on the European Union before hostile Islamic regimes gain control of the whole of North Africa.

Will it be Russia v America next?

Article Abstract:

Most observers now believe that the United Nations has lost all credibility as a peace-keeping force in Bosnia. Its failures in Bosnia have severely damaged the western alliance, and relations between the United Nations and the US are particularly tense. There is now a danger that the US and Russia will take opposing sides in a war in south-eastern Europe.
