Newt Gingrich received extensive media attention during his early days as Speaker of the House, and his popularity served to make the Republican party extremely strong. He seemed more powerful than president Bill Clinton, and was widely seen as the next president. However, this situation has now changed dramatically. Gingrich is in fact damaging the fortunes of his party, and his destructive techniques have now worked to his own disadvantage. People have been alienated by his air of certitude, and Clinton has been able to exploit him.

Nelson Mandela was completely captivated when he met Winnie, the woman who was quickly to become his wife, when he was in his late 30s. This blinded him to her true nature, and throughout his time in jail he refused to believe reports that she had been involved in adultery and violence. Only recently has his attitude changed, and he has now sacked her from his government.
