Fear and loathing in Peru's press

Article Abstract:

Many Peruvian journalists believe that the country's National Intelligence Service is seeking to intimidate and silence investigative reporting. Death threats have been made against Angel Paez since he reported Peru's purchase of fighter aircraft from the former Soviet republic of Belarus, and Baruch Ivcher, owner of Frequencia Latina, the local Channel 2 in Lima, Peru, has fled the country. This has also been the case with Jose Arrieta Mattos, the former head of Channel 2's news programme.

If he could make an ass of himself, what about them?

Article Abstract:

It is interesting to consider whether the school acting roles of Britons who later became famous reveal anything about the path their life later took. Minister for Further Education Tessa Blackstone, for example, is reported to have played Mrs Malaprop extremely well, while fellow minister Ann Widdecombe was admired for her acting in the death scene when she played Richard II. Diana, Princess of Wales, would only appear on stage on condition that she did not have a speaking part.

Fear and loathing

Article Abstract:

Austrian novelist and dramatist Thomas Berhard was extremely critical of his compatriots, portraying them as unintelligent and untrustworthy. He even went as far as to state in his will that none of his plays should be performed in Austria. His works contain many very unusual characters, and this makes them strangely fascinating. He has become popular in the UK over recent years, and his 1979 play 'Eve of Retirement' is shortly to open at the Gate Theatre in London, England.
