Why privatisting Channel 4 will impoverish us all

Article Abstract:

Channel 4 has established a strong presence in the UK as a broadcaster serving minority interests. It has been able to be experimental, and can afford to ignore considerations such as ratings. It allows new producers to gain experience, and can support new ideas until they are successful. Its innovative approach has had an influence over television broadcasting as a whole. For these reasons, many people are concerned about the possibility that the government's manifesto may include a commitment to privatise Channel 4.

They should pay for making you wait

Article Abstract:

Under clause 25 of BR's (British Rail) terms and conditions it is not liable for any costs incurred by passengers whose trains have been delayed or cancelled. The Consumers' Association is challenging the reasonableness of this clause under the 1977 Unfair Contract Terms Act. Seven cases involving BR customer negligence are proceeding through the High Court. It is believed that BR's new passenger charter will offer season ticket holders discounted renewal for poor services.

Festive telly fun

Article Abstract:

There is extremely fierce competition among the UK's leading television broadcasters over the Christmas period. They keep the details of their planned schedule a secret for as long as possible, and even go as far as to issue deliberately misleading information to gain advantage over their rivals. Schedules become completely different over the Christmas period from the rest of the year, and will inevitably be attacked by critics.
