The fly on the wall has to tread very carefully

Article Abstract:

Granada Television wanted a film made about social workers, and producer-director Peter Carr was given the job. He got the agreement of the director of Humberside social services Robert Lake, and a team working on the Bransholme estate outside Hull, UK was finally used, this estate housing 70,000 people. It is Europe's biggest municipal housing scheme, had a great deal of poor accommodation, and is known to be a problem. All but one of the team agreed to appear although they asked to see the final film before allowing their film to be used. Child protection was the main activity of the social workers.

Labour should listen carefully to nurse

Article Abstract:

Many of the 500,000 nursing staff in the National Health Service remain firmly committed to this organisation, even though they have been undervalued for a long time and suffer from low pay. They have put aside personal considerations and have insisted on increasing emphasis on improving patient care through better education and increased professional regulation. Against this background, most nurses are reacting with disappointment to the Labour party's new health policy, which fails to recognise the crucial difference between public health, primary health care and general practice.

Read carefully and digest

Article Abstract:

The government White Paper 'The Health of the Nation' aims to achieve more health promotion rather than ever more satisfactory medical treatment. Recommendations to industry to reformulate standard foods to reduce saturates, fat and sodium, and plentiful provision of vegetables and fruit are steps in the right direction. However, healthy choices are not always possible or practical and advertisements for smoking and unhealthy foods do not help.
