Academia - a case of US and them

Article Abstract:

Lack of funding and excessive bureaucracy are making it extremely difficult for UK universities to compete with leading US universities, according to Professor David Cannadine, new director of the Institute of Historical Studies in London, England. He believes that the leading US universities are now the best in the world, with those which have traditionally had a good reputation, such as Cambridge and Oxford, losing their prestige. He feels that academics in the UK are placed under very strong pressure to become involved in administration, thus giving them very little time for teaching and writing.

Economists fall for the lure of lucre

Article Abstract:

The vast majority of economics graduates in the UK choose not to pursue an academic career. Indeed, only six British graduate students with first-class degrees began PhD studies in the 1998 to 1999 academic year at the 13 universities with the highest ratings for economics. Economics graduates are aware that they can earn very large salaries with investment banks and consultancies, while the financial rewards of an academic career are very poor.

The long, winding and expensive road to university

Article Abstract:

Attending open days and interviews at UK universities can prove extremely expensive for the parents of prospective students. In some cases, it may be necessary to decide not to consider universities that are a long distance from the student's home.
