Across the Atlantic: grey power is the US secret weapon

Article Abstract:

There is a strong trend in the US towards older people re-entering the workforce. Indeed, the number of men aged between 55 and 64 in the workforce has increased by 2% since the beginning of 1996. Companies are keen to recruit older workers, and are not necessarily offering them lower wages than in the past. This trend has significant implications for the UK. Here, encouraging the retired and early retired to return to work could bring considerable benefits in terms of ensuring that the current economic boom is maintained.

Why equity funds like life in London

Article Abstract:

London is one of the key international financial centres in terms of the volume of equity funds managed, attracting business away from New York and Tokyo. It is benefiting from the growing trend towards overseas investment, where it has been strong for some time, and from the rise in emerging market investment, where it also has a strong presence. The increasing use of 'local' fund managers is also working in London's favour.

The regulator must go by the board

Article Abstract:

The regulators set up to monitor the activities of the UK's privatised utilities had no example to follow and no experience on which to base their activities. There have inevitably some mistakes, particularly the technical basis on which prices are controlled and the corporate governance of the regulatory body. Some observers now believe that all regulators should be abolished and a new, more effective, system set up.
