Act now if you want the good life when you retire

Article Abstract:

An occupational pension scheme is usually a better option than a personal pension, but the tax breaks offered by personal pensions may make them better for certain people. Those considering starting a personal pension plan before 2001, when the government plans to introduce new stakeholder pensions, should ensure that their plan can be easily transferred to a new scheme. It is worth looking at other approaches to saving for retirement, including investments such as personal equity plans. However, only pension schemes offer tax relief on contributions.

Time to get a fair deal from our pension plans

Article Abstract:

Many pension plans being marketed in the UK do not offer the customer a very good deal, especially if it is necessary to stop or transfer plans because of changing circumstances. The value of a pension plan really depends on how low its charges are, but it is often very difficult for the potential customer to compare charges. The best way to assess a policy is to consider charges at a number of different stages in its life, looking particularly at the early stages, when most people are likely to stop contributions.
