After 25 years, Dicky doesn't look so tricky

Article Abstract:

The Watergate scandal of Jun 1972 was particularly significant for the way in which it prompted growing media and public cynicism about political life. It encouraged a new approach to investigative journalism, in which any suggestion of a possible scandal is investigated in great depth. However, journalists today are developing new attitudes to Watergate and to political life as a whole. The events surrounding Watergate now seem very tame compared with political scandals which have taken place since, and people now have very low expectations of politicians.

Indians raise the stakes on casinos

Article Abstract:

The delicate relationship between the US government, the states and Native Americans is being placed under considerable strain by conflict over gambling rights on Indian reservations. The conflict has become particularly acute in California, where Republican governor Pete Wilson has called for Indian tribes to stop using video slot machines as a condition of an agreement that would make their casinos legal. The Indians claim that slot machines are vital to the casinos' profitability.
