After the suicide, a wall of silence

Article Abstract:

A new form of Mafia activity has become established in Sicily since the mid-1980s. The most terrifying activity, especially extortion and murder, is being carried out by the 'stiddari,' members of a rival organisation to Cosa Nostra, the classical Sicilian Mafia. The new-style Mafia operate in areas where there is no established Mafia tradition, and have had a devastating impact on many small towns. These include Niscemi, where business activity has almost completely ground to a halt.

Arrest us, but we'll be back next week

Article Abstract:

A law in Italy which prevents people with Aids from being held in jail for more than three days, regardless of the crime they have committed, is allowing three men with Aids to regularly get away with holding up banks. The police are unable to take any positive action to stop the gang, who have long criminal records and are known heroin addicts. The justice ministry is now under pressure to repeal the law which has allowed this situation to develop.
