Air-traffic control calling: sorry, the sky is full

Article Abstract:

The European Civil Aviation Conference comprises 51 control centres with 22 different computer systems in 23 countries. Eurocontrol operates in Maastrict where four countries pool systems but it has limited coverage, due to be augmented in Jan 1993 when Spain and Italy will join. The Eatchip project, the European Air Traffic Control Harmonisation and Integration Programme, is pressurising governments for compatible electronic information transfer systems. EC transport policy makers are drafting rules for compatible equipment in Jul 1992.

Has Denmark done for Delors?

Article Abstract:

Jacques Delors, EC president since 1984, discreetly advises member states to compromise. His term of office ends at the end of 1992 and the next President will be for two years to synchronise with the European Parliament. Delors believes strongly in a federal Europe and has stated that delegation of power to member states will be necessary. No country wishes him to resign but if the Maastricht treaty is not ratified, pending the results of the Irish referendum on Jun 18 1992, Delors will be redundant.

EC airlines still clinging to state subsidies

Article Abstract:

European airlines should compete on equal terms but government subsidies to state-owned airlines affect the burgeoning single market. The EC transport commissioner Karel van Miert submitted a restructuring plan for Iberia, the Spanish state-owned airline, to his colleagues for approval, which was granted. State aid does not encourage inefficiencies to be resolved and causes problems for new services. Technology, new airports and the single market are expected to improve air travel in 2000.
