Albright's overtures fail to sway Lebanese

Article Abstract:

There was considerable tension surrounding a meeting between Lebanese Prime Minister Selim Hoss and US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Hoss made it clear that Syrian troops would remain in Lebanon as long as the Lebanese authorities wanted them to, rejecting Albright's request for the withdrawal of all foreign forces from Lebanon. He also indicated that Lebanon feels that the refugee commission formed in 1991 has nothing to do with the repatriation of the more than 200,000 Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.

Serbs choose to unite with Russians

Article Abstract:

Members of the joint Yugoslav parliament have voted overwhelmingly in favour of joining the union of Russia and Belarus. Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Vojislav Seselj has emphasized that Yugoslavia will never give in to Nato military action in the Balkans, and has stated that Yugoslavia has strong cultural and historical links with Russia and Belarus. Many Yugoslav diplomats believe that Russia could eventually provide military assistance to Yugoslavia if Nato air strikes continue.

Athens and Ankara at odds over genocide

Article Abstract:

Greece is to hold a 'Genocide Day' to mark the violent destruction of the Greek community in eastern Turkey in 1922. This is likely to create friction with Turkey. Similarly, tension will arise from plans by the city council in Ankara, Turkey, to construct a 'genocide' monument to the Algerians who died in the war of independence against France.
