America gets used to terror

Article Abstract:

The muted response among Americans to the bomb attacks on the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania reflects changes in the way the US sees itself and its role in the world. The death of Americans in events abroad such as the Iranian Embassy hostage crisis reduced the US's involvement in foreign policy, but it has not retreated into isolationism. The US remains deeply involved in the world, and has made a large-scale commitment of people. Its response to the recent bombings has been more measured than its response to similar events in the past.

Ribbons bind the emotions of Middle America

Article Abstract:

The capture of three US soldiers by the Yugoslav army on the border with Kosovo, Yugoslavia, appears to have temporarily boosted support in the US for military action in the Balkans. Many Americans have been angered by the fact that Yugoslavia plans to try the soldiers under its own military law. However, politicians are aware that public opinion can change very rapidly. Indeed, popular support for the conflict in Kosovo remains much lower than that for attacks on Iraq and Afghanistan.

Anger in US at Iraq's narrow escape

Article Abstract:

Many Americans will be critical of President Bill Clinton for having failed to go ahead with military action against Iraqi President Saddam Hussein when he had the opportunity. It is likely that there will be renewed calls for the removal of President Saddam. The US government has stated that its confrontation with Iraq has ended in victory, but it is clear that efforts to undermine President Saddam by military power have not been successful.
