America's beef about food safety

Article Abstract:

Intensive farming methods have made food inexpensive and plentiful in the US. Consumers have had few concerns about food safety, as they have assumed that the government had their best interests at heart. However, the recent outbreak of E coli food poisoning in Colorado has highlighted that there may be some negative aspects to intensive food production methods. The US forms a vast single food market, and it is possible for contaminated products to be distributed extremely widely. Furthermore, the large quantity of food safety regulations encourages some food manufacturers to cut corners.
