America's heart of darkness

Article Abstract:

Racism remains a significant element of US society in the 1990s, even though its outward characteristics have changed to adapt to new social conditions. Many ordinary Americans feel that racism has declined because there is no longer strict segregation of blacks and whites, but in fact blacks and whites still remain largely separated. Many whites remain wary of blacks, even if they could not actually be called racist. The significant progress made by blacks since the 1970s is seen as a threat by some sections of white society.

If you want to find true British values today, look to black youth

Article Abstract:

Significant progress has been made towards eliminating racism in the UK. Race relations even seem positive in parts of the country where race riots took place in the 1980s, such as Brixton, London, England. There is probably still hardcore racism below the surface, but it is now rarely expressed in public. The new Caribbean dimension to Britishness has made a very positive contribution to the quality of national life, and young black people are setting a positive example to their white contemporaries.
