Forget the gunboats - it's time for good old-fashioned diplomacy

Article Abstract:

It is important to avoid taking action in Yemen too hastily just because British nationals are being detained there. Adopting an overtly confrontational attitude towards the Yemeni authorities would simply strengthen the position of Islamicists looking to increase their hold on power. This situation requires traditional diplomacy, and UK Foreign Secretary Robin Cook must now show that he has the ability to stand firm.

Amid the din of war, listen out for the politician who keeps silent

Article Abstract:

UK Chancellor Gordon Brown has kept a very low profile in relation to Nato military action in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. However, it appears that he has planned very carefully to ensure that this conflict does not destabilize his position. He has made it clear that he is not a leading political figure in the conflict, thus ensuring that he will not be blamed for any financially unpleasant domestic repercussions. If military action in Kosovo does lead to higher taxes in the UK, then Brown will not be held responsible for raising them.
