And the toast is Slava!

Article Abstract:

It is important to be optimistic for the future of Russia, according to conductor and cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, who had his name 'erased' by the Soviet authorities in 1974. He now regards himself as a citizen of the world, but retains strong cultural roots in Russia. He has had contact with many prominent composers, and has been involved in many significant performances. He is shortly to undertake a series of concerts at the Barbican Hall in London, England, with the London Symphony Orchestra to mark his 70th birthday.

Music? It's just child's play

Article Abstract:

It is important to retain in adult life the ability to think like a child, according to cellist Yo-Yo Ma. He tries to ask very basic questions, and is curious about many subjects. He believes that music is only relevant through its connection with wider issues, and sees close links between theology, sociology, arts, science and philosophy. This belief is reflected in the way he tackles Bach's Six Suites for cello. He has addressed this music in collaboration with artists from other disciplines.

Saying no to the hard sell

Article Abstract:

The cello can produce a very wide range of sounds and voices, according to cellist Steven Isserlis. He places great emphasis on style, and is respected for his warm, concentrated sound. His sound is very personal, and this has brought him a certain amount of criticism. He greatly enjoys chamber music, which brings him into contact with other performers. He has been particularly influenced by Pablo Casals, who was able to bend his strong personality to different pieces of music.
