Animals have no rights, but we still have duties towards them

Article Abstract:

It is important that a civilized and morally aware society takes seriously the views of animal welfare protesters, even if their methods sometimes attract controversy. Animal rights campaigner Barry Horne, who is now close to death through starvation, can be seen as wrong because he is causing suffering to himself and to his family. However, he is in a way justified in using such extreme tactics because the government has refused to discuss the concerns of animal welfare protesters. It is now time for the UK to deal with its very contradictory views on animal welfare.

Good enemies need each other just as much as good friends do

Article Abstract:

It is clearly proving very difficult for former Prime Ministers Edward Heath and Margaret Thatcher to accept the idea that they could become reconciled. They both seem to have decided that it would benefit their image to appear magnanimous as they enter their later years, but actually putting this into practice is presenting considerable challenges. True friendship may not actually be possible in politics, as friendships do not define and sustain politicians in the same way that enmities do.

The one lesson of the Troubles is that you can't hurry peace

Article Abstract:

The peace negotiations in Northern Ireland have their own ritual. The parties involved are given a deadline, and are warned that they are being offered the best possible deal, with no other choice except failure. This approach has proved misguided. Discussions about decommissioning must focus on the need to decommission the will to act violently, rather than merely the decommissioning of weapons. However, UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is right to create the expectation of success.
