Another bite of the windfall apple

Article Abstract:

There seem to be poor long-term prospects for UK building societies which abandoned mutual status. They have been losing large numbers of customers, with Halifax, for example, seeing its share of the mortgage market, in terms of net lending, decline to 6%, from 11%. Savers are shifting their money to the new savings banks, deterred by the low interest rates being offered by former building societies. Building societies which have retained mutual status have attracted many new savers and borrowers.
